Chicago based artist Sari Maxfield works with ink on mylar. This technique gives her paintings depth while maintaining an overall thin application of color. The resulting images have a distinctly antiqued quality to them. The organic twists and tangles of ink encase her figures in an environment they are both a part of and emerging from.

The blending of body and nature, beauty and horror, the real and the imaginary are reminiscent of 18th century romanticism and victorian art, and her color pallet and feminine subject matter echo Art Nouveau portraiture. These historic references contribute to the creepy sense of calm Maxfield creates in her compositions.
Maxfield graduated in 2006 with a BFA in Studio Art from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
